11:30 Early Dismissal

posted Aug 14, 2017, 9:27 AM by Samuel Foster   [ updated Aug 15, 2017, 5:35 AM ]

The Aug. 21 eclipse will be the first total solar eclipse in the contiguous U.S. since 1979.  The eclipse will begin to be visible in New Castle at 1:12 pm, with the maximum (90% coverage) at 2:40 pm and finally ending at 4:00 pm.

As always, student safety is our top concern. Looking directly at the sun is unsafe. The only safe way to look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses”. Per NASA, homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun. The Craig County Public Library has “NASA approved” eclipse glasses to wear during this event.  At no time should participants remove their eclipse glasses and look directly at the sun as it could cause permanent eye damage or other unknown affects.

There is no way for the school to guarantee that your child would not remove their eclipse glasses, and rather than keep children inside during this historical event, we have decided to dismiss at 11:30 on Monday, August 21st in order to allow you as a parent to decide on the safest way for your child to view the eclipse.
